Westminster College of the Arts (WCA) of Rider University seeks a Director of Performance Management. This is a full-time, 12-month, non-bargaining administrative position that reports to the Dean of the Westminster College of the Arts. The position is open until filled, and the successful candidate will start at the earliest possible time. The Director is a member of the Dean’s executive team, assisting in strategic planning and decision- making.

The Director of Performance Management will have a unique and special opportunity to initiate entrepreneurial activities and expand the outreach of the College through performances, tours, possible franchised operations, and enhanced use of facilities designed specifically for the performing arts. WCA comprises four units: the School of Fine and Performing Arts, Westminster Choir College, the Westminster Conservatory, and Westminster Continuing Education.

Overview: Working with two direct reports and various other personnel, the Director will supervise development and implementation of the master performance calendar; negotiate and coordinate performance contracts; and oversee scheduling and execution of performances, special events and guest artists. The Director will implement University and College policies related to WCA performance activity, and manage Performance Management budgets.

Collaborating with producers of productions and events, the Director will establish and lead processes to collaborate with marketing, advancement, and public relations offices to support performances. The Director will supervise staff who produce and deal with contracts, production support, and public events, and serve as liaison between office staff and academic departments (e.g., AEIM) to support events, performances, and productions.

Working with full-time staff and graduate assistants, the Director will:
  • create, coordinate and supervise development and implementation of the WCA master performance calendar
  • in preparation for submission to University Legal Affairs, initiate, negotiate, and/or supervise creation of performance contracts with professional orchestras, guest artists, accompanying musicians, etc.
  • oversee scheduling and execution of on- and off-campus performances, special events and guest artists
  • coordinate use of campus spaces with University Auxiliary Services and the 4 WCA units
  • arrange for and manage off-campus and tour performances, particularly of Westminster Choir College ensembles
  • coordinate and supervise appropriate and selected non-performance aspects of the academic departments
  • coordinate performance aspects for summer activities sponsored by the WCA, for productions mounted by the academic departments, tours, community events, and auxiliary or entrepreneurial enterprises
  • in conjunction with Westminster Continuing Education and Westminster Conservatory, assist in developing the summer camp, workshop, and seminar calendar
  • be able to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
Additional responsibilities
  • member of the Westminster College of the Arts administrative and advancement teams
  • work with External Affairs, Public Relations, Admissions, and Marketing personnel
  • coordinate Westminster Choir College Commencement and other special events
  • oversee and create related budgets
  • work with the Dean, staff, faculty and all relevant departments in support of the WCA mission
  • occasional travel with ensembles for off-campus and tour performances
  • oversight of Box Office and ticketing operations.

The Westminster College of the Arts enrolls 500+ students in undergraduate and graduate programs, and nearly 2000 community members are enrolled in Conservatory programs. Position Requirements
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate and provide evidence of administrative abilities appropriate to this position. These include the ability to:
  • understand and support the artistic mission of the WCA units
  • meet deadlines through attention to detail and excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • maintain a professional demeanor at all times and exhibit calmness and flexibility in responding to the many demands of the performance dimension of the College
  • work independently, and anticipate, organize, and prioritize work
  • exercise good judgment, resolution skills, and strong decision-making – particularly to effectively manage multiple projects
  • negotiate contracts for performances, tour venues and housing, guest artists, etc.
  • demonstrate strong professional verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
Background/Qualifications
  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in an arts or arts-management discipline.
  • At least (5) five years’ experience in a leadership position.
  • Capable of maintaining confidential and discretionary information.
  • Documented success in managing an arts organization or similar educational operation. Evidence of visionary leadership.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of various teams
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Experience negotiating contracts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Priority will be given to candidates with
  • Training and significant experience in an arts or arts-management discipline, including business, operational and strategic planning, and entrepreneurship.
  • Advanced training in arts management or a similar leadership area.
  • Significant experience working with professional organizations similar to Carnegie Hall, Kimmel Center, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Kennedy Center/Lincoln Center, other regional or national arts centers, agencies, etc.
  • The ability to work in both Macintosh and PC-based platforms is desired, as is familiarity with 25Live, Canvas, Banner or other educational scheduling and computer software.
