Introduction

The City of Scottsdale is seeking a highly motivated and mechanically inclined Craftsman to join the team as a Railroad Crew Chief at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. The team consists of three (3) Crew Chiefs and one Engine & Carousel Mechanic. This is a dynamic and challenging position at one of Scottsdale's signature parks, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and generating over $2.8 million in revenue. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining historic 15-inch gauge railroad equipment, including steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, as well as designing, fabricating, and installing parts to keep the antique carousel and railroad operational. The Crew Chief will troubleshoot and repair various mechanical equipment, from power washers to G Scale Trains, gates, and tracks.

The Crew Chief will contribute to planning and implementing new ideas and events, lead in training staff on safe and efficient operation of locomotives, rolling stock, and tools, and serve as a creative, skilled, and personable leader to enhance the park’s reputation as a family destination. The role requires leadership, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage and motivate other City employees. No two days are the same.

Previous knowledge of railroad operations, steam locomotives, and AutoCAD is preferred but not required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Four years of experience in automotive maintenance and repair.
  • At least six months of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and related experience may be considered.
  • Preferred: Experience in machining, Tool & Die, welding, fabrication, or related fields.

Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements

  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license with no major citations within the past 39 months. Out-of-state licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to Arizona.
  • Residency in Arizona is required during active employment, regardless of remote work approval.
  • Additional licenses or certifications may be required depending on specific department needs.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Scheduling, assigning, and approving repair, preventive maintenance, and inspection tasks for steam-powered locomotives and railroad equipment.
  • Diagnosing and repairing malfunctions across a variety of equipment, vehicles, and machinery.
  • Developing and fabricating custom parts as needed.
  • Collaborating with vendors and contractors to engineer parts for locomotives, rolling stock, track, and carousel.
  • Using and instructing others in the use of hand and power tools for diesel and steam locomotive maintenance.
  • Disassembling, rebuilding, adjusting, reinstalling, and aligning locomotive components.
  • Developing and maintaining training programs, SOPs, JSAs, and procedures for railroad equipment and carousel operations, including staff training.
