School Nurse (LPN)


Qualifications:

  • LPN
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing with a current good standing Tennessee Practical Nursing License or other legal credential required
  • Current certification in CPR BLS for Healthcare Provider
  • 3 years of nursing experience (pediatric experience is a plus)
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency in enteral feedings, catheterizations, and diabetic monitoring preferred
  • Physical ability to endure extended periods of standing, walking, running, sitting and/or stair climbing. Ability to push/lift/carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel preferred
  • Ability to communicate with teachers/parents/children
  • Professional appearance
  • Dependable transportation to site

Reports to:

  • Principal

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Conducts school programs of immunization, physical examinations, sight and hearing testing as directed by Health Services.
  • Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
  • Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects.
  • Maintains confidential, up-to-date cumulative health records and documentation on all students. (per HIPPA guidelines)
  • Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.
  • Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Implements Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Participates in in-service training programs and Continuing Nurse Education.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
  • Performs job duties under the supervision of Lead Nurse.
  • Perform responsibilities according to the Nurse Practice Act and Roane County Schools Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Administers medication and treatments to students as ordered by physicians.
  • Consult with physicians and other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Seek assistance if unfamiliar with ANY procedure.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments, resources and other school nurses.
  • Function as an Educational Assistant/Front Office Assistant when not performing Health Service duties.
  • Report to work location assigned by Supervisor, which may require departure from base school location as needed.
  • Establish and maintain satisfactory, respectful working relationships with the school environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the administrator.
