Unit Description:
The Observation Unit at UM Health-West is a newly launched department focused on patients requiring short-term monitoring and treatment to determine the need for inpatient admission or timely discharge. Care in this unit emphasizes rapid reassessment, efficient care delivery, and patient turnover with support from case managers and social workers. Discharges may occur outside typical daytime hours to help reduce hospital length of stay.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in an Observation Unit setting.
- Perform frequent patient assessments to monitor condition changes, treatment effectiveness, and discharge readiness.
- Monitor cardiac telemetry for abnormalities and intervene appropriately.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and treatments in accordance with provider orders and unit protocols.
- Support patient discharge planning and transitions of care in collaboration with case managers and social workers.
- Utilize Epic for accurate and timely documentation of patient care, assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
- Float to other MS/Tele units within the hospital as needed, in accordance with clinical scope.
Experience Requirements:
- Active Michigan RN License (no pending licenses accepted)
- BLS (AHA)
- EPIC EMR experience
- Minimum Experience: 1 year in MS/Tele or Cardiac Telemetry
- First-time travelers accepted: Yes
Scheduling & Floating:
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: Required within scope to similar units
- Block Scheduling: Not available
