Social Security provides financial protection for our nation's people, supporting Americans throughout all of life's journeys.

We administer retirement, disability, survivor, and family benefits, and enroll individuals in Medicare. We also provide Social Security Numbers, which are unique identifiers needed to work, handle financial transactions, and determine eligibility for certain government services.

Through this program you will have the opportunity to interact with members of our community to answer general questions and process applications for Social Security cards. You will also perform a variety of administrative duties to support our mission.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Learn basic Social Security policies and systems used to process work.
  • Perform administrative tasks crucial to the office operation such as the processing of incoming and outgoing mail, certification and digitization of paper documents, as well as labeling and routing scanned documents to the appropriate work unit.
  • Conduct interviews with customers to process applications for Social Security cards.
  • Review and evaluate documents for authenticity and acceptability.
  • Transfer information from paper disability forms to electronic disability files for continuing disability reviews.
  • Observe all workplace rules, including those relating to safety, honesty, integrity, and confidentiality of records, during the performance of services under the Federal Work Study agreement.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC's Financial Aid office.
  • Must be able to earn a Work Study award.
  • Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester
  • Must work at least 10 hours and no more than 20 a week during the semester.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with customers and coworkers.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must commit to attending an orientation at the outset, as well as 2 trainings per semester.
  • Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred transportation method.
  • Pass a criminal background check.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties Special Instructions

Work-study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work-Study program, which requires establishing financial need through the FAFSA application from the Financial Aid Office. If you do not have work-study awarded to you, you will not be eligible for work under work-study positions.
