Job Description:

JOB TITLE: Dean of College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Position Description: The Dean serves as the chief administrative officer of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics, which includes programs in computer sciences and cybersecurity. The Dean is charged with providing the vision and leadership needed for the college to excel and to advance the University's teaching, research, and service missions. This role reports to the Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and oversees the college processes of hiring faculty, managing the budget, setting academic policies, developing academic programs, and fundraising. The Dean is also responsible for coordinating student activities, participating in university committees, advising the Provost on academic matters, providing academic mentoring to faculty, and facilitating industry and community partnerships in the fields of science, math, and technology. This position is a full-time, 12-month administrative position with a teaching load of two courses per academic year. This is a non-remote position at Louisiana State University of Alexandria.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a master's degree in a relevant field. A doctoral degree is highly preferred.
  • Experience in academic administration, preferably at the dean level or a similar leadership role within a college or university setting, and/or
  • Extensive career experience in the sciences or technology, including significant professional

accomplishments and a track record of leadership in these fields.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the fields of science, math, and technology, along with a commitment to their advancement and innovation.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the ability to inspire and motivate faculty, staff, and students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and

collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong strategic planning and organizational skills, with the ability to develop and implement

long-term goals and initiatives.

  • Proven experience in budget management and resource allocation.

The key responsibilities of the Dean include the following:

I. Planning and Oversight

  • Engaging faculty, staff, and students in constructive discussions on important college matters to foster a positive and high-quality working environment.
  • Facilitating strategic discussions to shape the future academic directions of departments, programs, and the college itself.
  • Advocating for the college by participating in university-wide processes such as strategic planning, budgeting, and facilities planning to position the college favorably within the broader university context.
  • Overseeing accreditation, program review, and other processes that contribute to the continuous improvement of the college's activities.
  • Engaging in important discussions within the Deans Council regarding institutional planning, policy development, and other significant activities to effectively represent the college's interests.
  • Ensuring coordination among all college components, including departments, centers, academic programs, economic development activities, public service initiatives, and other related endeavors.
  • Developing and implementing the college's strategic goals, governance policies, and procedures.
  • Managing the college's budget, overseeing expenditures, and ensuring adherence to sound fiscal practices.
  • Participating in space and facilities planning while effectively managing the college's physical infrastructure and equipment.
  • Ensuring compliance with policies-including, but not limited to IRB, grants, contract management, FERPA, and Title IX-by the college's faculty, staff, and students.
  • Communicating university directives and policies to college members and effectively relaying the challenges and opportunities encountered by the college to the Provost and senior administration.

II. Curriculum and Program Development

  • Collaborating with faculty to develop and maintain robust academic programs through curriculum development.
  • Ensuring academic programs meet and surpass accreditation standards.
  • Overseeing the academic program review process to enhance program quality.

III. Faculty and Staff Affairs

  • Recruiting highly effective Department Chairs, faculty, staff, and other direct reports while

conducting their performance evaluations and ensuring accountability for high-level performance in their respective positions.

  • Providing strategic oversight for faculty recruitment, hiring, and retention.
  • Developing college-related policies pertaining to promotion, tenure, and structured reviews.
  • Conducting annual performance reviews of faculty and staff and determining appropriate raises.
  • Supporting faculty and staff through mentoring programs and nominating them for awards.
  • Allocating resources to ensure faculty success in teaching and research.
  • Cultivating a sense of collegiality, collaboration, and fairness within the college.
  • Collaborating with relevant university offices to manage and resolve conflicts as they arise.

IV. Student Success

  • Providing strategic direction in student recruitment and retention.
  • Monitoring the academic progress of student cohorts.
  • Assisting students in achieving their professional and career goals.

V. External Affairs

  • Building and nurturing relationships with department alumni and major donors in consultation with the Office of University Advancement.
  • Promoting the college's successes to the media in collaboration with the Office of Strategic Communication and to elected officials in coordination with the Office of the Chancellor.
  • Securing private funds for scholarships, professorships, programs, facilities, and other college needs.
  • Enhancing the college's regional and national profile through engagement with professional and scholarly associations, funding agency boards, and other prestigious organizations.
  • Building partnerships and advisory panels with key industry, corporate, and community stakeholders in the sciences, math, and technology to foster a robust curriculum-to-careerconnection.
