Position Overview

This student position may require heavy, physical and manual labor. This position may require moving equipment, working outside on grounds, and/or helping with preventative maintenance. This position may also require clerical work, including but not limited to data entry, research, organization, technical usage of computers and athletic event specific programs.

Hours per Week

  • 15 - 25 hours per week.
  • Working nights, weekends, and holidays is a possible function of this position.

College/Department Overview

The Athletics Department at the University of Central Oklahoma currently supports over 400 student athletes in 15 NCAA Division II sports including Football, Men's & Women's Basketball, Men's & Women's Golf, Baseball, Softball, Wrestling, Women's Track & Field (Indoor & Outdoor) and Cross Country, Women's Tennis, Women's Soccer, Women's Rowing and Women's Volleyball.

Department Specific Job Functions

Responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses sustained by UCO student athletes.

Adheres to emergency action plans as stated in the policies and procedures manual during emergency situations at practice or competitions.
  • In-season and off-season sport coverage as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director - Head Athletic Trainer
  • Responsible for counseling and education regarding injury to UCO student athletes
  • Assists with implementation of athletic department drug-testing policy
  • Coordinates pre-participation physical exams with team physicians and coaches
  • Creates and maintains student athlete files, including primary health insurance and physical form
  • Coordinator of insurance, primary and secondary; Record keeping and documentation of medical claims
  • Assists with coordination of scheduling of medical coverage for home and away competitions
  • Utilizes electronic injury tracking software to document and track injury/treatment progression of each student athlete
  • Works with team physicians, physical therapists, and other allied health professionals to deliver care to student athletes
  • Communicates clearly with student athletes, coaches, administrator, and physicians
  • Oversight of student athletic trainers' kits primarily for student athlete insurance information and appropriate supplies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Enrollment Requirements

Fall/Spring Semesters: All student employees must be enrolled at least half time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half time enrollment for Fall/Spring is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. International students shall be enrolled full time to be eligible to work as a student worker. Full time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.

Summer Semester: Student employees working regular student positions must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to be eligible to work during the summer. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in Fall classes in order to work on campus, but they (and the department) will be required to pay FICA taxes. Student employees working FWSP positions must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours (if undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (if graduate) in order to work during the summer in a Federal Work Study Program position.

Enrollment Exception: If the number of credit hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum number of hours required for student employment, the student must obtain a letter from their Academic Advisor (stating the number of hours needed to graduate and anticipated graduation date) and submit it to Human Resources. Qualifications/Experience Required
  • Must pass NATA BOC certification exam prior to beginning employment.
  • Be Oklahoma State Licensed or eligible.
  • Bachelor's degree and admittance into the Master of Athletic Training program at UCO.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong people skills.
  • Strong organizational & communication skills.
