POSITION LOCATION: ANY LOCATION WITHIN THE INTERMEDIATE UNIT AS ASSIGNED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: AS ASSIGNED BY THE CHIEF EDUCATION OFFICER

LABOR STATUS: NON EXEMPT

QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or GED is required. Must possess current, valid Act 34, Act 114, and Act 151 clearances as well as completed and acceptable Act 168 background checks.

Must become Qualified within the established timelines and maintain Qualified status by completing training hours each school year as required by PA Chapter 14.

Must be able to follow written and oral instructions and be able to perform basic computer tasks.

Must have a valid PA driver's license

OBJECTIVE: To assist and support teachers in the education and training of learners with disabilities and in fulfilling the program needs and objectives of the Intermediate Unit.

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

The duties of a teacher aide may be limited to simple routine tasks or may be complex and multi-dimensional depending upon the location and type of disability of the students served. The duties may include but are not restricted to the following areas of instructional and/or non-instructional activities:

• With direction from the teacher and/or supervisor, make and document objective observations and collect data appropriate to the individual with exceptional learning needs. (E)

• Establish and maintain a positive rapport with all learners, the teacher and others in the classroom, including fellow aides and other service providers. (E)

• Follow the daily classroom and individual learner schedules as determined and directed by the teacher. (E)

• Attend to all daily living needs, including but not limited to all activities for personal hygiene, eating/drinking, toileting, grooming, where appropriate to meet the individual needs of the learner(s). (E)

• Use developmentally and age appropriate strategies, equipment, materials, and technologies, as directed, to accomplish goals/objectives specified in the individual learner's IEP. (E)

• Assist in adapting instructional strategies and materials according to the needs of the learner. (E)

• Follow written plans when working with a small group or an individual seeking clarification as needed. (E)

• Assume responsibility in assisting in maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment and follow prescribed policy and procedures. (E)

• Use basic strategies and techniques for supporting the inclusion of individuals with exceptional learning needs in various settings. (E)

• Safely provide physical assistance for individual learner(s) as needed, for example, lifting, self-help, gross motor. (E)

• Self-initiate in providing support for class routines and instructional practices. (E)

• As directed by a certified/licensed professional, prepare, adapt, and/or organize materials to support teaching and learning. (E)

• Demonstrate effective strategies for the management of behavior of groups or individuals. (E)

• Use appropriate strategies and techniques to increase the student's self-esteem, self-awareness, self-control, independence, and self-advocacy. (E)

• Implement positive behavior support plans, both classroom and individual learner plans, as determined and directed by the teacher. (E)

• Use appropriate strategies and techniques to increase the learner's self-esteem, self-awareness, self-control, independence, and self-advocacy. (E)

• Participate as requested in conferences with families or primary caregivers as members of the educational team. (E)

• Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity in cultural heritages, lifestyles, and value systems among children, youth, and families. (E)

• Function in a manner that demonstrates the ability to use effective problem solving, engage in flexible thinking, employ appropriate conflict management techniques, and exercise objective and prudent judgment. (E)

• Function in a manner that demonstrates a positive regard for the distinctions among roles and responsibilities of teacher aides, professionals, and other support personnel. (E)

• Function in a manner that demonstrates the ability to separate personal issues from one's responsibilities as a teacher aide. (E)

• Demonstrate adequate and sufficient academic skills including oral and written communication. (E)

• Engage in activities that promote own knowledge and skill development. (E)

• Accept and use constructive feedback. (E)

• Practice within the context of IU standards, procedures, and policies including but not limited to confidentiality, attendance, dress, punctuality. (E)

• Assist learners to/from restrooms which may include changing of diapers. (E)

• Assist and support learners on and off daily transportation. (E)

• Assist learners in safe and efficient transition between activities. (E)

• Demonstrate regular and timely attendance. (E)

• Where appropriate, complete accurate and timely Personal Care Assistant Logs, as required by Medical ACCESS. (E)

• Assume any other duties as assigned by teachers, supervisors and administrators.

IU8 may change descriptions, as jobs are analyzed and modified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

In the course of performing the duties and functions of a Teacher Aide the holder of the position will be required to:

• Frequently reach above and below the waist

• Stand for long periods of time during the workday

• Move/lift and/or assist in moving/lifting items/objects and/or learners (ages ranging from 3-21) up to 40 lbs.

• Frequently walk varying distances inside/outside the school and community setting

• Occasionally sit

• Frequently bend, squat/stoop and grasp

• Participate in CPR, First Aid, and safe crisis management and de-escalation, as required

MENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks; and to think, interpret, analyze and problem solve. Must be able to converse and interact with individuals with diverse levels of education and abilities.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Upon hire, all new employees must obtain a certificate of medical examination as well as a tuberculosis test as required under Chapter 14 of the Public School Code, 24 P.S. §§14-1416, 14-1418; 22 Pa Code §49.12(b) (regarding education); and 28 Pa Code §23.44 (regarding health and safety).

ENVIRONMENT

School, non-school, and community environments. Travel in school buses, vans or cars may be required.
