Schedule: Part time - Saturday and Sunday - 8 hours each day.

The Public Health Nurse Practitioner provides specialized nursing services in the area of correctional health care, family planning, communicable and sexually transmitted diseases; does related work as required. An employee in this classification is responsible for providing specialized nursing services requiring considerable medical judgment to determine appropriate procedure within scope of practice. Nurse Practitioner requires an advanced level of competency in nursing through additional education/training as well as a Nurse Practitioner's license. Work is performed under the direction of the Nursing Program Manager who reviews work primarily on the basis of results attained, case conferences and evaluation of progress on established annual goals. Although supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification, incumbents may be responsible for overseeing the work of and providing technical nursing instructions to Associate/Bachelor Degree in Nursing students in clinical settings.
Typical Daily Tasks

1. Obtains and records client's health history; performs complete physical examinations.

2. Diagnoses, treats and plans appropriate health care for clients; consults with supervisor, Public Health Officer or other physicians as required; refers clients to physicians and/or outside agencies as appropriate.

3. Provides and prescribes medication within areas of specialty.

4. Counsels/instructs patients in preventative health care, health education and family planning.

5. Schedules additional lab procedures and interprets lab test results.

6. Establishes and maintains client medical charts and other necessary records; prepares reports related to departmental programs and activities.

7. Drafts and recommends departmental policies and procedures.

8. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbents may be responsible for overseeing the work of and providing technical nursing instructions to Associate/bachelor's degree Nurses in clinical settings.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Thorough knowledge of the methods, principles, techniques and practices of nursing. Considerable knowledge of medical and lab equipment and testing procedures; diagnosis and treatment of communicable and sexually transmitted diseases; family planning; pregnancy health principles; laws and regulations governing public health; interviewing, conflict resolution and counseling techniques. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; independently assess, diagnose, treat and evaluate patients; promote awareness and provide information on public health issues; maintain records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with social service agencies, physicians and other health care providers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master's Degree in Nursing; and completion of a state acceptable Nurse Practitioner's program, Family Nurse Practitioner; and two years of progressively responsible experience in correctional health care; nursing; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the above-described duties.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Licensed by the State of Oregon as a Registered Nurse; certified by the State of Oregon as a Nurse Practitioner; Must be able to obtain and maintain current CPR certification.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
Those employed in this position are subject to drug testing and background investigation including criminal background investigation. Conviction of a crime may disqualify an individual for this position. Must pass and maintain Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) security clearance.

This position is not eligible for full medical benefits.
