Cathie is a leading global offshore geoscience and geotechnical engineering consultancy specialising in geospatial analysis, marine geophysics and geotechnics, marine cables and landing, foundation engineering, pipelines, trenching and numerical analyses. We work primarily in the offshore wind industry for clients who design, install and operate offshore facilities.

We work primarily in the offshore renewable energy industry for clients who design, install and operate offshore, nearshore and onshore infrastructure. Our geotechnical discipline is in high demand due to our depth of experience and reputation in the industry advising high profile developers and contractors alike.

About the position

We are looking for experienced, independent, senior geotechnical engineers to join our team in Providence, Rhode Island in senior level roles.

The successful candidate will be independent and autonomous in their activity, in managing projects, from technical to financial and administrative, supported by an experienced team of offshore engineers. They will be well-equipped to mentor and lead our engineering staff to deliver consultancy services for our offshore energy projects.

Those services will include ground characterisation projects, submarine cable engineering, ground modelling, investigation design and supervision, foundation design and installation, supervision, and other various consultancy activities. You will be working as part of a team or managing teams of geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, geophysicists, and GIS specialists.

You will be exposed to client contacts and be required to think outside the box and, where required, push the boundaries of knowledge in the industry with the help of Cathies experts.

You will work with dynamic and entrepreneurial colleagues spread across a range of disciplines.

You will be given the opportunity to contribute to research and development initiatives, participating in international conferences and the preparation of technical papers.

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have a masters degree in Civil Engineering with geotechnical specialty and be a Registered Professional Engineer. They shall demonstrate 10+ years of consulting experience, with experience in ground modelling, foundation engineering, geotechnical laboratory testing, and in the application of geotechnical design methods or in support of large infrastructure projects. A Ph.D. degree in geotechnical engineering would be an asset.

Direct, extensive experience in geotechnical design of foundations and cables or pipelines, ground modelling, site investigation, in offshore and in the wind farm industry will be an asset. Installation, operations and maintenance experience, particularly for offshore structures will also be a plus.

  • hold good communication skills, initiative and team work; communicate well and represent Cathie at client meetings, workshops, presentations and publications;
  • be able to lead and/or contribute to project management activities, including budgets, resources, client liaison, delivery, and QA;
  • always be respectful of fellow colleagues and managers, with a proactive attitude, and strong work ethic.

Requirements:

  • have a passion for geological, geotechnical / civil engineering and the renewable energy sector
  • masters degree in geotechnical engineering
  • registered Professional Engineer
  • solid knowledge of soil and rock mechanics and foundation engineering
  • solid knowledge of ground investigation methodology and interpretation
  • knowledge of structural engineering
  • demonstrable design experience and working knowledge of applicable regulations, codes of practice and standards in geotechnical and foundation engineering
  • solid knowledge of geotechnical testing and ideally including advanced laboratory tests (e.g. Cyclic TX/Cyclic DSS, ring shear, resonant column tests)
  • experience in writing Ground Investigation Reports (GIR) and Geotechnical Design Reports (GDR)
  • experience in ground investigation campaigns (onshore or offshore) and data interpretation, including ground modelling
  • experience in management and review of technical deliverables
  • ability to write technical/calculation reports in a concise, precise and logical format
  • strong attention to detail
  • good interdisciplinary communication skills
  • ability to think independently and solve problems, applying innovative solutions where required
  • experience in managing staff workload and prioritize tasks

Desirable:

  • offshore client representative experience or site investigation experience, current offshore working certificates
  • knowledge of AGS formats and geotechnical reporting software
  • experience using Python, Tableau, Power BI
  • experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors
  • independent in the use of industry-standard numerical modelling software such as FLAC, or PLAXIS for modelling soil-structure interaction problems
