The Staff RN, under general supervision of the Medical Director and Practice Manager, functions as an ambulatory practice nurse for the MGH Waltham Heart Center, a noninvasive cardiology academic group practice and testing site. Four days on site, one day remote per week (post adequate orientation period), staffing and resources dependent.'
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical;
- Emphasis is placed upon direct patient care in coordination with attending cardiologists, advanced practice clinicians, and administrative assistants in the ambulatory clinic setting.
- Triages phone calls from patients, families, providers, etc.; responds to clinically related communications, as directed.
- Tracks, collects, and reviews outpatient test results; reviews abnormal results with supervising physician/advanced practitioner; and informs patient of test results and clinical impact/plan.
- Assists with clinical instruction for patients, e.g. medication teaching.
- Contacts patients to update medication lists; supports management of prescription refills; and handles insurance prior authorization of medications.
- Assists with management of patients being followed in the practice on anticoagulation.
- Conducts insurance prior authorization of diagnostic testing and procedures when clinical support required from administrative assistants.
- Conducts insurance prior authorization for patient medication and assists with appeal when necessary.
- Completes various medical and administrative forms, e.g. disability, VNA documentation.
- Supports administrative operations by acting as a clinical liaison to administrative support staff.
- Maintains and follows patient care protocols. - Performs other duties, as directed.
Diagnostic;
- Performs various stress testing procedures; ETT, Stress Echo and pharmacologic
- Establishes intravenous access for the administration of pharmacologic stress agents, agitated saline and/or contrast agents directly supporting the Echocardiography program
- In collaboration with the practice's medical assistants, performs ECGs; provides patient hook-up/education/enrollment of cardiac monitors, and other diagnostic equipment.
Skills/Competencies:
- Experience in cardiology, emphasis on past critical care (ED, ICU) understanding.
- Knowledge of the cardiac implications of a body's response when undergoing exercise.
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
- Ability to problem solve, function as a resource to other members of the team, and resolve complex issues on behalf of providers and patients.
- Exceptional organizational skills, flexibility to manage multiple tasks and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of computer applications necessary to function in an ambulatory setting, e.g. MS Outlook, MS Office Suite.
- Comfort in a practice environment that promotes collaborative, team-based, patient-centered care and is forward thinking in considering new practice models.
Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in Nursing Required with one year of experience. Bachelors Degree preferred.
- Registered Nurse, Massachusetts licensure
- Current ACLS certification
- Relevant professional experience in clinical nursing specialty
