Embark on a fulfilling career as a veterinary technician in the newly developed Comparative Medicine Core at Moffitt Cancer Center. The Comparative Medicine Core oversees and supports Moffitt's animal research and technical support. We are hiring two Veterinary Technicians III to be part of developing this new program to provide professional veterinary care to the research animals focusing on the highest animal care and welfare standards. Veterinary Nursing is acceptable as well!

Position Highlights:

  • This position provides a four-day workweek with ten-hour workdays, making it a great option for individuals seeking work-life balance.
  • The new Speros campus will have a 30,000 sqft Comparative Medicine state-of-the-art Facility, which will complement MCCs existing, fully accredited 28,000 sqft facility.

The Ideal Candidate:

Must have:

  • Experience working with research facility, specifically mice.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, emergency/referral practice or veterinary teaching hospital, as well as multimodal anesthesia experience.
  • Strong anesthesia monitoring and anesthesia protocol skills.

Preferred:

  • Surgical experience with rodent models, including survival surgical experience and maintaining a survival surgery suite.
  • Technical services support
  • Experience with rodent breeding colony production techniques and maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs preparatory and surgical procedures on various animal species.
  • Coordinates scheduling technical procedures with research staff, maintains records, documents procedures, and logs time for chargeback, as needed.
  • Maintains rodent colonies, including that of breeding colonies, and assists with the rodent health surveillance program.
  • Obtain tissue samples for genetic characterization of mice.
  • Performs tissue collection including tumors and organs. Collects

weights, recording and maintaining data as directed by the

research labs and/or veterinarian.

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (from an AMVA program), four (4) years of veterinary technician experience inclusive of two (2) years working in a research facility.
  • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, an Associate's degree (AVMA program) and six (6) years of veterinary technician experience inclusive of two (2) years working in a research facility may be considered.
  • Current license, registration, or certification as a veterinary technician (CVT, LVT, RVT). Will be required to provide documentation upon hire that shows passing of Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).
  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level is preferred.
