POSITION SUMMARY:

The University of St. Mary (USM) School of Nursing hires Graduate Assistants (GAs) to assist with the undergraduate nursing programs. GAs are involved in helping to facilitate students' growth and progress in knowledge and skills through classroom interactions in the lab and simulation experiences under the guidance and supervision of credentialed faculty.

GA position: Graduate students interested in a GA appointment with the simulation, health assessment and skills labs may contact the USM Simulation director or the nursing chair for directions on the application process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Instruction / Coaching under the direction of credentialed Nursing Faculty:

  • Coaches undergraduate Nursing students in the acquisition of psychomotor and physical assessment skills following lesson plans designed by course faculty.
  • Assesses student performance of physical assessment and psychomotor skills using behavioral checklist provided by the faculty.
  • Provides student remediation sessions as required.
  • Supports simulation experiences for all customers of the simulation and laboratory activities. Includes setup, running, breakdown, and debriefing learners as needed.
  • Collaborates with clinical faculty to lead lab sessions.
  • Collaborates with Simulation lab coordinator on continuous quality improvement efforts for following best practices in simulation as well as instructing, coaching and learning.
  • Facilitates student learning during scheduled and open lab hours.
  • Reviews course content to be expert facilitator of lab session.
  • Promotes learner engagement by fostering realistic learning environments.
  • Always models nursing professionalism.

Maintains Simulation, Health Assessment, and skills lab learning environment:

  • Assembles equipment and supplies prior to classes, for demonstrations, and for evaluations.
  • Secures all equipment and supplies in appropriate locked and unlocked areas.
  • Maintains and updates inventories of all holdings, including equipment as assigned.
  • Reports when supplies are low or equipment is not working.
  • Maintains all Simulation and lab spaces in an orderly manner at all times, including cleaning.
  • Cleans all mannequins and mannequin parts weekly and as needed.
  • Unlocks & locks all simulation and lab spaces at the beginning / end of each day.

Administrative:

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, & PowerPoint).
  • Attends mandatory Simulation orientation and meetings with faculty members.
  • Assists with preparation of, reviews and suggests edits for all Simulation documentation (printed and online) and related tasks as needed.
  • Adheres to all Simulation and lab policies and procedures noted in the policy and procedure document.
  • Assists with Division of Nursing events as directed.
  • Duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must hold a Bachelor's degree and be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas.
  • Must meet eligibility for USM Graduate Assistantship program which includes acceptance into one of the USM graduate programs.
  • Must be able to successfully pass required background screening as appropriate.
  • Affinity with the overall mission of the University of Saint Mary.
