Purpose or Summary Statement of Primary Duties and Responsibilities of Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct nursing services to medically fragile students and other duties as assigned under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse. Duties are to be performed in accordance with the standards of professional school nurse practice, district/state, board of education policies and procedures and the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. The LPN provides direct health services to students according to their IEP/504 plans.

  2. The LPN monitors and provides appropriate care to medically fragile students to and from school and throughout the school day.

  3. The LPN maintains a safe and healthy environment for all students.

  4. The LPN maintains health records in accordance to the Chicago Public Schools records policy.

  5. The LPN records progress and maintenance of care to assigned students and submits this data electronically daily.

  6. The LPN works cooperatively with all school personnel.

  7. The LPN performs other duties as assigned by the certified school nurse and health service nurse assigned to the school building and/or the nurse manager.

Qualifications for Job:

All qualified applicants must be graduates from an accredited school of practical nursing.

Must possess a current State of Illinois Licensed Practical Nurse License, and a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.

Skills and Abilities:

The potential applicant must possess thorough knowledge of the principles of licensed practical nursing, knowledge of medical terminology and use of basic medical equipment. Excellent clinical skills and the ability to work with school-age children. Good written, verbal and computer skills are a must. Traveling between schools during the school day may be required.

Experience and Education Required:

The Chicago Public Schools is seeking all qualified individuals with 3 years of pediatric experience and excellent clinical skills. The applicant should have experience working with students with culturally diverse backgrounds. The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing and possess a valid pharmacology certificate.
