BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Renders professional nursing care for the surgery patient in the pre- and post-operations phases. He/She will focus on patient preparation and evaluation for surgery, as well as the post-operative recovery and discharge in order to achieve optimal outcomes for the surgery patient.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing (Bachelor's Degree or a two year Associate's Degree).

Minimum Work Experience: Must possess current hospital experience (within past five years) or be a new nursing graduate (within last two years).

Required Licenses / Certifications: Licensed RN in the State of Idaho. BLS Certified. ACLS and PALS highly recommended.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Understanding and following of hospital mission statement of high quality, high compassion, and high customer service. Works collaboratively and positively with surgical staff, anesthesia staff, physicians, and staff from other departments. Creation and maintenance of a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place. Provision of direct and indirect patient care which involves the use of nursing judgment, critical thinking skills, and interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge of and ability to use the nursing process in assessing, diagnosing, planning, intervening, and evaluating to meet individual patient needs and education of the patient Prepares patient for surgery. Demonstrates ability to analyze and facilitate patient preparedness for surgical procedure. Must be proficient with tasks such as IV insertion and surgical prep. Maintains ongoing awareness of the times patients are scheduled for surgery. Regularly consults with operating room schedules and staff. Ability to perform tasks such as patient teaching and patient discharge planning. Identifies physical and psychological needs of patient and family and reviews with OR nursing staff, anesthesia or surgeon as needed. Performs complete chart review, checking physicians orders and required documentation (i.e. H&P, Surgical Consent.) Awareness of medications utilized in the Perioperative setting with ability to properly administer them. IV administering and monitoring. Facilitates punctual patient arrival and patient assessment by performing phone interviews with patients the day before the planned procedure. Work collaboratively with the PACU staff in transportation and receiving of patient during the post-op phase. Attend staff meetings and in-services as required. Well use appropriate communication regarding patients rights of confidentiality as well as unit function and staff relationships. May be required to function as preceptor to new orientees. Will work other units as needed after adequate orientation has been provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assesses and diagnoses patient and family needs in order to provide quality care to assigned patients. Develops, discusses, and communicates a realistic problem list (plan of care) for each patient in collaboration with each patient/family/significant other to address all identified needs. Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient. Evaluates the identified problems, care provided, and patient's responses are reassessed in order to meet patient and family needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered. Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for use by the health care team, to ensure quality care. Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure. Pursues professional growth and development. Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the Surgical services division as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary. Will communicate with surgical team management possible conflicts or potential problems. Evaluates the identified problems, care provided and patient's responses are reassessed in order to meet patient and family needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered.
