About the MGH Main OR

Mass General Hospital's Operating Room department is comprised of an extraordinary team of OR nurses, Surgical Technologists, Equipment Techs, OR Assistants, and OR Coordinators providing care for patients undergoing complex surgical procedures.

Nurses at MGH are registered nurses who are responsible for assuring competent, compassionate, individualized, nursing care for specific patients and families, including delegation to and supervision of non-professional clinical and support staff. The operating room nurse is responsible and accountable for the overall nursing care management of patients undergoing surgical procedures. They collaborate with perioperative nursing leadership, surgical and anesthesia colleagues, and other members of the patient care team to achieve optimal patient outcomes; ensure the smooth and efficient function of the operating room; and meet the cultural, spiritual, and ethnic needs of each patient and family.

The Operating room nurse:

  • Must have a strong understanding of sterile technique and be able to work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creates a care plan for surgical patients based on patient, procedure, and surgeon needs.
  • Participates in and monitors activities conducive to the safety of patients and team members.
  • Actively drives participation by all team members in the Universal Protocol process.
  • Responsible, along with scrub personnel and surgical team members, for prevention of retained surgical items.
  • Responsible, in conjunction with scrub personnel and surgical team members, for the care and handling of specimens.
  • Monitors and supports use of aseptic technique.
  • Anticipates changes and adjusts case preparation according to the variation in the surgical procedure.
  • Selects and organizes supplies and equipment specific to the proposed surgical procedure.
  • Cares for instruments and supplies according to established procedures.

Qualifications for an RN

  • Minimum of one-year Operating Room RN experience required.
  • RN licensure in Massachusetts required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Full and part-time positions available.
  • Days with rotation to evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call required.
