Controller - Heartland Alliance International (HAI)

Summary: The Controller oversees Heartland Alliance International (HAI)'s organizational finance and accounting functions, along with the organization's overall budgeting, financial reporting, treasury management, and financial planning. The Controller will provide the strategic direction and financial oversight of organizational financial operations to ensure continued business growth, and that the company delivers on its mission, strategic goals, and objectives. The Controller will develop and implement financial management and accounting policies, systems, and procedures, including strong internal controls. The Controller oversees all aspects of HAI's financial success, including setting priorities, tracking cash flow, analyzing strengths and weakness in the organization's finances, and ensuring HAI's financial functions are streamlined and optimized. The Controller ensures HAI's Executive Director, the Alliance's President, and Board of Directors are apprised of the financial position of the organization, its performance, and all other financial issues facing the organization. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Functions:

Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Financial Planning

  • Supports the achievement of HAI's strategic imperatives by ensuring that the organization's financial operations are implemented efficiently and in alignment with organizational goals and values.
  • Works with the organization's executive director and chief operating officer to develop and oversee the organization's financial strategy and vision for the organization and ensuring effective implementation of associated priorities and work plans to implement financial activities.
  • Leads all key components of the finance function such as financial management, planning, analysis, and reporting, expense management, cash management, accounting, payroll, and tax compliance, among others.
  • Leads the design and implementation of financial and accounting policies, systems, and process, including establishing and maintaining organizational finance and accounting controls in all aspects of the finance and accounting functions.
  • Responsible for design and implementation of processes to ensure the organization is retaining the required financial records.
  • Works in a team setting with Heartland Alliance's financial leadership, HAI's parent company, to ensure maintenance of and timely preparation of the Alliance financial reporting and organizational financial statement for consolidation at the enterprise level and for audits.

Financial Reporting

  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and budgets under applicable Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Leads necessary compliance reporting.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the organization's annual budget.
  • Monitors cash balances and cash forecasts, budgets, assesses financing needs, and manages organizational expenditures to ensure that the organization stays solvent.
  • Ensures financial management data, financial analysis, reports, and dashboards are accurate, up-to-date, and readily available for decision-making.
  • Performs monthly reporting of actual versus budgeted performance, balance sheet, and cash flow and supporting variance analysis.
  • Regularly monitors indirect rate performance as part of closing process and provides recommendations to achieve targeted rates.
  • Prepares financial data and analysis for presentation to the senior leadership team and board of directors.

Treasury Management

  • Oversees U.S. tax and other statutory and regulatory reporting to secure timely and accurate submissions. Coordinates closely with Heartland Alliance finance team on tax reporting requirements.
  • Oversees the financial operations of domestic and international country offices. Ensures project offices in foreign locations follow local tax and statutory requirements, operate according to organizational finance and accounting requirements, and that operations, systems, consolidation reporting requirements are functioning properly and coherently. Supervises the work of outsourced accounting companies to ensure the organization's financial control environment, ensuring that appropriate processes, controls, and systems are in place for all organization's operations.
  • Supports the design and implementation of pricing strategies for services that balance organizational growth and indirect rate management.
  • Establishes a workplace environment that values teamwork and fosters collaboration, acknowledges and rewards employee contributions, and develops strategies to enhance synergies between the parent company and HAI's global team.

Performance Management

  • Cultivates a culture committed to outstanding customer service and develops methods and integrated solutions to meet internal and external needs.
  • Serves as a thought leader for the organization internally and externally, particularly in driving financial strategies to achieve responsible growth.
  • Leads and/or participates in business development opportunities, contributing to successful proposal development, particularly ensuring effective pricing and/or proposal cost strategies, and that business development efforts follow HAI's values, ethics, standards, and best practices.
  • Supervises team of 3-4 financial analysists who collectively provide financial instructions and support to U.S.-based and international country offices. Creates and implements change to work assignments, policies, and procedures to meet operational needs, improved workflow, and efficiency. Communicates changes to appropriate parties and documents changes made to existing procedures.
  • Maintains strong relationships with individuals within the organization to identify needs of the organization.
  • Interviews, hires, evaluates disciplines, terminates, and is responsible for relevant employment transactions.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable):

  • Team of three to four financial analysist US and International based

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required. MBA, finance, or relevant advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of Five (5) years of progressive relevant experience with an additional two (2) years of international accounting experience, and demonstrated competencies with accounting for foreign currency, preferred experience in dynamic banking/financial environments, government and non-for-profit accounting.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):

  • Multi-lingual, able to speak and read Spanish and/or Arabic is highly desirable.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret accounting principles, government regulations, financial reports, and legal documents. Capable to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Strong analytical ability required. Ability to identify problems, ask questions, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or questions from management, staff, board members, auditors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to effectively prepare and write narratives for financial analysis and present information to top management, staff, and Board members. Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders. Must be able to prepare and write narratives for financial analyses that conform to prescribed style and format in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Windows operating systems, and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance. The individual must have thorough knowledge of fund accounting software. Blackbaud Financial Edge and Intuit QuickBooks experience preferred.
  • Ability and comfortability working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information, possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

Work Arrangement:

This role is eligible for a "hybrid" or "remote" work arrangement. If hybrid, it is expected this person would be able to meet for "in person" meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.
