Working at Jewel-Osco in Chicago, IL: 3 Employee Reviews

Jewel-Osco Employee

"I’ve worked with jewel osco for 5-10 years let’s say. My experience has been one where there is no life outside of work. Working Long hours, ranging from 5 days in a row to 10 it all depends which week or holiday it is. Never ever a set schedule. Working mornings, then mid, then closing each week there is a totally different schedule that is if your full time or salary you have to abide by whatever schedule they put you on. I’ve never had holidays or weekends off unless requested and that most of the time doesn’t get approved because there is a “visit” or it’s a “holiday” or a corporate visit. The management seems to not care about the employees and the upper management either. The store managers job is basically a dictator. Delegates to people what to do and then when it’s not done gives write ups for “attendance” or “poor work performance”. The store manager throws all the work load on the assistant store manager and then just sits in the office doing “paper work”. The managers have to pick up the slack of the employees not showing up or calling off. It’s really never a easy day at jewel osco. The payroll is always cut so the salaried managers and store manager can get a bonus at the end of the quarter. The only time payroll is approved if there is a presidents visit or corporate out of town is coming. This company is basically where every man and woman are for themselves and no one cares about anyone at all. I would rather be on the street begging than working at jewel osco and rotting my life away."

"I do not recommend the Pick Up and Go Delivery option in Chicago, Il. I have worked there, and so many problems occurred. 1.) If we do not have the item, there is a substitute option. It depends on the customer's preference, but it will specify such as same brand, different size. Employees ignore that specified request, and get anything similar. Price is definitely disregarded. Due to Covid-19 outbreak, customers cannot return or exchange. So, the customer is stuck with what they received. 2.) Due to new employees or just casual forgetfulness, some employees forget the customer's frozen items in the freezer or an item sitting out on the cart. Therefore, customers will not receive part of their order due to the lack of responsibility of the employees. 3.) Produce is picked using dirty gloves that have touched many surfaces or equipment. Also, unclean hands (employees) are grabbing customers produce. Employee logic: customers should wash their vegetables. You can only use water to wash produce, soap is highly unrecommended by health experts. How can water alone remove the bacteria employees just placed on the produce? I am not sure how employees have a clear conscious after doing these dishonest, disgusting methods. Customer Service needs improvement in various departments as well. One minute the employee is nice, the next minute they snap at you over a simple question of where something is because they (employee) are unable to handle stress. Lastly, on a positive note, the store is big with enough space to shop. They also have proper CDC guidelines in place inorder for customers and employees to feel safe."
