IT Specialist at DynaVox Technologies
in Pittsburgh, PA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"I am happy not to work at DynaVox anymore, and would never go back."

What do you like about working at DynaVox Technologies?

"I honestly didn't like anything there. The free parking lot, or street parking was OK, if you are lucky enough for a parking pass after 8 months or so. The product is a good concept, but the iPad is killing them. However the device itself is not practical, and weighs 10 pounds."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Ask lots of questions, and when you get to the part of job offer ask LOTS of questions to make sure you understand everything."

What don't you like about working at DynaVox Technologies?

"After being there for a two months I started looking. The people were not very friendly, and management was never willing to help with any job-related issues. there was no team cohesion, and when I asked a question about something I was looked at like I had a horn growing out of my head. I worked on the South Side of the city, and not once did I go out to eat with anyone. I'm a social person, and liked knowing who I'm working with. It was not a good social company at all. No team lunches, happy hours, everyone on my team ate at their desk. I had three managers on a team of 6, and they contradicted each other in front of each other sometimes. I couldn't do anything without having someone hold my hand, and one manager never wanted me or anyone else on the team, to ask our team members for help. VERY micro-managed. I was also lied to during the interview. Part of this is my own fault for not researching more, but I was told the 401 was great. They only matched the first $400 for a calendar year, and that was it. After January I was done contributing for the year."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Stop micro-managing, help your employees when they ask, and try to include them in other team functions. I felt like such an outcast because I actually made eye-contact with people in the hall, and said hi to them."

IT Specialist at American Library Association
in Chicago, IL

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"I wouldn't work there again."

What do you like about working at American Library Association?

"You get lots of free books and lots of vacation time."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It seems like any jobs that can be remotely considered technical have been among the first to be terminated in recent layoffs. Among these are web development, IT and production, as well as admin assistant job. Before accepting employment at ALA you should consider that Forbes and the Wall Street Journal have recently run articles about the bleak career outlook for librarians, who are ALA's members and who help pay their bills."

What don't you like about working at American Library Association?

"Management is a closed group of elite lifers who only lay off the worker bees, never themselves in any case that I've heard of, even though their salaries can be two to three times that of their underlings. My manager seemed to want to keep my position as small and narrow as possible, lest anyone find out that I knew a lot of stuff she didn't. In my experience, which I realize was probably not like everyone else's there, the ALA had the same backstabbing, undermining, and job insecurity that you might find in any corporation, but without the same pay. A few people that were really smart and talented didn't stay there long, choosing instead to take corporate jobs."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"You should reward competency instead of political acumen. Eventually some of the directors who are making $100K and more will have to start to be laid off as this association continues its inevitable decline. You can't balance the books forever by laying off administrative assistants and techs while leaving your own cushy jobs untouched."
