What do you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"I like the great data sets to explore. The department was large enough to provide a variety of experiences and the possibility of sharing programming and best practices. Problem was, there was never enough time to do it."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Make sure that you get in at the highest possible salary, because you may not get another raise for many years. Be prepared to get bounced around depending on the department. Most people I knew did not stay more than three years."

What don't you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"Too BIG! It's HORRIBLE dealing with benefits or HR, or getting to the right department for ANY troubleshooting. Most of the company has no idea what other areas do or don't do. There are a lack of communication, duplication of effort, and political issues with upper management. It is tough to get a straight answer about anything. Don't EVER go out on a medical leave."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Remove layers of management. If someone is at their Peter Principle position , knock them back down to doing the work that they are good at. I would strongly recommend that the annual employee feedback survey either be completely revamped to include actual changes that are then implemented and fully accountable, or eliminated entirely. There's a lot of talk of change and growth and improving morale, but nothing lasts. Most of the people I worked with did not believe that anything that came down from upper management would ever stick long enough to really improve the work environment. It was especially disheartening to hear that upper level management was getting huge pay raises, while those of us in the middle of the trenches, would have to do more, with no new employees (frozen for three years), no raises, and little or no advancement opportunity. If I could run things, I'd allow every exempt employee to work from home, since all meetings are held online anyway. I'd insist that low level managers be trained on true development of their staff, and include a real evaluation of managers by their peers and by their staff. Fire the ones who are abusive to staff, and reassign the workload between groups to level the amount of work."
