"They generally left me alone to perform my job. Except for the last assignment, I was trusted to supervise the construction of many new school projects."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"If you apply for and obtain a specific position, you will be expected to be appreciative that you have been hired for this position. Don't screw it up or you're gone! (whether or not you screwed up would be judged by your superiors without your input)."
What don't you like about working at Hammond Construction?
"The only time I ever heard from my superiors was when there was a problem. There was little or no support system. Neither was there ever a sense of job security. My superiors expressed no confidence in my abilities to perform my job. The truth is that when something went awry the assumption was made that I had made a bad decision."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"I believe every organization takes on the personality of its leader. If I were the owner of the company, I would spend more time on the front lines where the money is made or lost. I would try to gain an appreciation for how my employees make their decisions and if I felt it was necessary, I would try to get them to understand and buy into the company philosophy."

What do you like about working at Hammond Construction?
"I am paid fairly well for not having completed my college education. The benefit package is better than many professions in the area and are 100% paid. I like being placed on different job sites, it keeps things fresh, and I am trusted by the owners to handle projects and special tasks that other employees would not have the opportunity to complete."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"You must try and set yourself apart from all others around you. With the lack of work in this area and a full union hall, the company can have their pick of those in need of a job. You must convey that you will put in much more than the minimum requirement and that you are willing to carry out all instructions the first time they are given."
What don't you like about working at Hammond Construction?
"Like any construction business in Ohio, when winter hits so does lay off season. Working in the field gives you a disposable reputation. Asking for a promotion or any type of advancement gets you a place first in line for that layoff check. Also, being bound to union pay scales means no recognition for extra effort over other employees."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Management should have field experience in my opinion. It is extremely hard to relate to your employees when you have never worked in the conditions that they do. Sometimes tasks are unreasonable and yet we are told to just make it happen."
