"My supervisor lacked a high degree of honesty and integrity. He also practiced a micro-management. He could not be trusted to deliver on his promises. There was a high percentage of attrition because of his management style."

What do you like about working at Fry's Food & Drug Stores?

"I didn't like anything about working at this company. It was the worst job I've ever had."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Stay as far away from this company as possible. Don't walk away, RUN."

What don't you like about working at Fry's Food & Drug Stores?

"Oh where do I begin They kept placing me in jobs that were 15+ miles away. I only got about $150 each paycheck and I would get them all late. I was supposed to work part time, but ended up getting full time hours. I would work 8 hours without getting a lunch. They always made me talk to the customers, then would go and talk poorly about them. They were going to have me work for 12 days straight without a day off. DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"PLEASE check your employee's hours and see how illegal this company really is."

Assistant Manager

"Wish I'd done anything but this job."

What do you like about working at Fry's Food & Drug Stores?

"There is always job security for this major company in the grocery industry."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't do it. Even if it's temporary. Most of us got stuck here the same way. We wanted the extra money that manager positions paid but found that we were miserable years later. Most of us have no education and have never done anything else so we are unemployable to most other companies. Go to school or get a job where you can learn an employable skill."

What don't you like about working at Fry's Food & Drug Stores?

"Everything else sucks. Micromanagement. Horrible work shifts. No work/life balance. Poor pay for hourly folks which doesn't exactly draw the cream-of-the-crop to the job. Everything is controlled by Kroger back East so no real decisions are made here in Arizona anymore. Everything from what's on display to what time shifts start and end are all controlled from thousands of miles away. Negativity from all management above store level. No lunches or real breaks during your 10 hour (minimum) shift and if you get caught sitting down your labeled as lazy. Many stores that are considered bottom stores make their management work 6-day (60 hour) work weeks. Some managers I know have been doing it for months."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Get serious about changing this company's culture. The empty positions of assistant department head that you guys can't seem to fill will start to be joined by the salaried manager positions if you don't do something soon. Other jobs allow lunches and time off that doesn't get cancelled at the last minute. Managers who get 100 emails a day directing their every move no longer think for themselves anymore...."

What do you like about working at Fry's Food & Drug Stores?

"I like being physically active and the customers, for the most part, are very nice. I work in a very beautiful, upscale store and most of my coworkers are great to work with."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Expect to give 110% and pretty much forget about having weekends off due to demands of having a retail job. You must be available to work they hours and days they need you. Be prepared to wait at least 10-11 months for your health insurance benefits to begin. Don't expect a starting wage that will cover your bills. If these adjustments are not a problem for you, then you will probably thrive at Fry's."

What don't you like about working at Fry's Food & Drug Stores?

"All allotted work hours are determined by a measurement tool (ELMS) that ranks productivity vs. sales. If sales and productivity are up, then there are more workhours that can be distributed among the various departments. We work in an upscale Fry's (the 1st of its kind) and we are expected to give 110% while producing high-end, labor-intensive bakery products that meet & exceed customer expectations. We are not given any slack for having to put forth more labor or going the extra mile, so our department gets hours cut. It would seem logical to me to adjust the ELMS to allow for this difference. Workers are getting burned out at the pace and level of intensity they must work to make meager wages."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"To begin with, I would implement effective communications tools so that every worker on each shift is informed of changes and latest ideas so that there would be fewer discrepanices and surprises. Also, I would encourage an atmosphere of promoting workers' ideas and incorporate them as best as possible so that each employee feels like their ideas matter. In addition, I would foster career advancement so that each worker has an opportunity to move up and better their lives."
