What do you like about working at Fordham University?

"The low-stakes nature of the employment is by far the greatest perk about working here. I *can* screw up, but there are rarely if ever consequences for screwing up. There is very little pressure to perform and when you do go out of your way, people treat you like a superstar. In addition to Fridays off in the summer, a week at Christmas, etc., I work on essentially flex time and can work from home from time to time. Co-workers are all great and suitably laid back. It's a Jesuit university, so if you're into that aspect, the religious leanings can be comfortable, but they're progressive enough not to be stifling."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It is a very small company, so although there's substantial room to grow your position, you will still be very low in the organization and work (in a de facto way) for at least one person who has unveiled contempt for you. I understand that in most publishing companies, the way up is not to look for internal promotion, but to apply at other companies and sort of leapfrog back and forth. In this sense, Fordham would serve you well because you'll be able to put impressive things on your resume toward your next job."

What don't you like about working at Fordham University?

"Working with academics and the sort of people that like to work with academics can be infuriating. A sense of suicidal malaise descends on much of the staff twice a year as we read sequentially the list of our new publications for the coming semester because of how far removed they are from anything that would validate the large segments of our lives (the only lives we will ever receive) that we spend seeing them published. But I guess some people are into that."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I have no complaints about my direct supervisor. Speaking about the CEO is difficult to get into because this is a university setting--my small department has very little to do with the university president (who might count as a CEO) or even the head of our division. There are the normal bizarrenesses inherent in working in higher education, and these are peculiar to the institution, but not oppressive."
