Family Christian began as Zondervan Publishing House in 1931, when brothers Pat and Bernie Zondervan started the company at their family farm in Grandville, Michigan. The chain remained part of that publishing company until 1993, and has since expanded by acquiring a number of other companies. In 2012, Family Christian was purchased from a private equity firm by its management team and a group of Christian businessmen based in Atlanta. The owners plan to donate all of the store profits to Christian ministry and causes.
