Dick's Sporting Goods Careers & Info

Current CEO: Edward W. Stack

Status: Active

Dick’s Sporting Goods, Inc. is a chain of over 500 retail superstores in 42 states that sells sporting goods, camping equipment, hunting and fishing gear, sporting apparel and sporting footwear. Dick’s licenses its name to an ecommerce site operated by the eBay company GSI Commerce, which can create confusion among its customer base since website merchandise and price points are frequently different from what can be found in the stores.

The business began in 1948 as a small bait and tackle shop in Binghamton, New York. The business began expanding into the sporting goods market in the mid-1950s, but twenty years later, it was still just a two store operation.

Dick Stack’s son Edward W. Stack, now the company’s CEO, catalyzed the business’s rapid development, opening new stores throughout upstate New York in the 1980s before expanding into other regions. Along the way, Dick’s acquired other retailers, including Golf Galaxy, Galyan’s Trading Company and Chick’s Sporting Goods. The company is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and employs 25,000 people.

In 2010, Dick’s generated revenues in excess of four billion dollars. Sporting goods have proven to be much more resilient to recessionary forces than other retail categories, possibly because demand for the goods does not have to be created through marketing. Dick’s expansionary strategy was also helped by the collapse of the real estate bubble, which let the company acquire property for new superstores at a low price.

Dick’s core customer base are performance athletes and outdoor enthusiasts for whom sports equipment are less discretionary items than lifestyle necessities. Dick’s stores actually give customers a way to check the quality of their prospective purchases with onsite golf driving ranges and running tracks.

Experience Magazine thinks working at Dicks Sporting Goods is an excellent introduction to fulltime employment, in 2011 rating Dick’s one of the very best places for new grads to work. The majority of Dicks Sporting Goods careers begin in retail stores. If workers are sufficiently motivated, they can work their way up the ladder from store clerk to merchandise manager to store manager. The internal Dicks Sporting Goods culture is heavily sports-oriented, and one of the Dick’s benefits that past and present employees always cite is the 25 percent associate discount they get on sporting equipment.
