"No, since the majority of the hiring process occurs through the government's HR system and interviews are only a final step in the process"

What don't you like about working at Department of Health and Human Services?

"Because it is located in the nation's capital, adjacent to Capitol Hill, HHS attracts a good deal of over-educated and ambitious individuals. Since HHS only has enough high-level work for a limited number of individuals, most people are doing work that is administrative, not challenging, and below the level and quality of projects that they would be given elsewhere. Also, the bureaucratic nature makes it very difficult for any one voice to be heard. For those individuals interesting in making an individual mark, HHS is not a good place to go."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would suggest to get rid of the outdated and extremely hierarchical and militaristic manner in which HHS is run. Leave room for ideas from more 'junior' staff (and this means anyone not at least at the Deputy Director level-many of whom have PhDs, MDs, JDs and/or a great deal of professional experience)."

"Not enough promotion for the Administrative Assistant for all of the work that they perform."

"During the eveluation process, not enough promotion/acknowledgement for each employee in that field."

"The people are great to work with. They found assignments that were a good match for me and tried to help me better myself as a programmer."

"Sometimes assignments can be far apart"

"Continue to grow and develop an individual for the next level."

"Make sure you are a Mac user. The dept really love its Macs."

"The lack of resources and the machines that we where using. They were older computers trying to run the new programs."

"There really is nothing I can say about the management since it has been a while since I work there."

"I would tell someone who interviews here at the Dept of Human Service to think about other agencies"

"It seems to be unfair, they contract everything out and I'm losing my skill set, cant seem to get into the area I would like although I have a Bachelors degree in that area, and o yeah a Masters degree in that area."

"I would let employees cross train, not hire as many contractors, Help federal government employees with their development plan, and be positive"

"Have not found many thing I didn't like. How you make the most of a challenging experience dictates the outcomes."

"To be open and honest and tell it like it is."

"There were several approval layers to getting tasks and projects approved."

"Offer more training aides or solutions available to employees aside from waiting for classes to get approved prior to attending"

"It's a good company. As long as we do our work, we are allowed to have a flexible schedule."

"I worked for the United States Public Health Service for the summer months of 2013. Through this internship I learned so much about what it was to be an industrial hygienist and I found a work environment that I would be very happy to work in for the rest of my life. it was a good starting experience that I will now try to build upon through different experiences in the environmental health field."
