A customer service specialist answers inquiries from potential or current customers regarding a company's products or services. They may interact with customers in person, by phone, or by other means such as email and web based chat. Customer service specialists give information about the company's offerings to customers, maintain customer accounts, provide after sales service and sometimes perform some sales or technical support duties.
Skill Sets: Customer service specialists need to maintain a calm and professional image at all times, be empathetic to customers who are experiencing problems, have the ability to provide solutions to issues that arise. They also need to be able to deal with customers who are irate or angry about a problem they're experiencing.
Education: Specific education requirements vary from one employer to the other. At minimum, a high school diploma or related work experience is required. A college degree, especially one that is related to the employer's main line of business is an asset and may be required in some cases.
Career Path: Customer service specialists are used by various businesses such as banks, retail stores, phone companies, etc. Having prior customer service experience, even at entry level jobs where no experience is required, will be useful when applying for some of the better paid jobs, such as those involving service to high end or business clients.
