Customer service agents handle customer inquiries which can be over the phone, in person, or over the internet. On a typical day, a customer service agent serves as the first level of support clients interact with when attempting to find out information about a product or service or find a solution to a problem.
Skillset: Customer service agents generally have strong communication and troubleshooting skills. They must be able to multitask and work in possibly busy and noisy environment. Customer service agents must be organized and able to work as part of a team.
Education: Customer service agents may start with a high school diploma or GED and normally receive on-the-job training. Some industries may require an associate’s degree or higher but it is up to the individual employer.
Career Path: A customer service agent is considered to be an entry-level position in most companies. Strong communication and troubleshooting skills will serve a customer service agent well. Pursuing a degree will help increase desirability and chance of promotion. It’s a great opportunity to gain experience and build up a resume.
