"Covidien's top leadership has made sound financial decisions in terms of investing in acquiring technologies and agglomerating market share. They fall down when managing the develop org like a hedge-fund. Covidien struggles as engineering company, as they lack the ability to innovate and execute well from an engineering perspective. The issue lies with middle management... too busy managing up, as opposed to down, and creating a development org that is not focused on execution or delivery."
