Communications Manager at Kumon

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Bad company to work for. Think twice before joining. HR is bait and switch."

What do you like about working at Kumon?

"Overall the company has a laid back work environment with 5 people doing 1 person's job."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't waste your time on a company like this. Kumon has a backward culture. Staff are afraid to speak up because they fear being fired."

What don't you like about working at Kumon?

"The upper management sucks. Recently the Japanese upper management including President, Vice President and COO, as well as several other Japanese in the company in the U.S. were let go by our parent company in Japan. The rumor is that they were involved in a misappropriation scam. Past few years have been bad to work under the Japanese. The other upper management should have also been let go by the company. Everyone thinks they were involved in the scandal too. It has been difficult working here. Almost every week we have had a reorganization for the past couple of years. No one knows what they are going to get into when they walk into the office in the morning. Today you might have been doing one job, tomorrow you are suddenly put to do something entirely different even though you have no qualifications or experience. Then you are blamed for having failed. Training is poor. I don't know any company that has so many training programs and travel involved only to realize that the training was a complete waste of time. Working with the franchisees is a equally bad. They are arrogant and repulsive. The company hates the franchisees and the franchisees hate the company staff. The management turns a blind eye to what the franchisees because they are scared of the franchisees and want to keep their positions. I would never enroll my own children in the Kumon program, if I had any. The program sucks and the franchisees and company trainers do not know what they are doing."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"All the upper management must resign from the company. All Human Resources staff must resign for the constant reorganizations. You go to HR to file a complaint and next thing you know is that you are put on a performance plan soon to be fired. HR stop posting fake reviews on Glassdoor or asking staff to do so. The last time the CFO asked us to post rave reviews about the company on Glassdoor and rate the President really high. The same President now has been let go. That is a shame and goes to show how far some of the brown-nosers in the upper management go to keep their positions."

"Colleagues mean well, but serious lack of communication resources and autonomy."

What do you like about working at Harvard University?

"I have a flexible work schedule and I work with kind people."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The group decision-making process here is very frustrating -- ask what the decision-making culture is like for your department."

What don't you like about working at Harvard University?

"There is a serious lack of autonomy in decision-making and use of resources."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Give your communications people the resources they desperately need -- our struggles affect the entire school across all departments."
