Collectors are primarily responsible for securing payment of overdue accounts. On a typical day, the collector will contact several clients who have past due accounts and attempt to either get immediate payment of the balance or to set up an acceptable payment arrangement.
Skillset: Collectors need to have good listening and communication skills. They also need to show empathy, professionalism and understanding when dealing with debtors who have fallen behind on their payments. Persuasion is another important skill, as a collector must convince the debtor to settle the account as quickly as possible.
Education: In most cases, formal education beyond high school is not required to be a collector. However, a university degree in a field related to business or finance is an asset.
Career Path: A collector job is usually an entry level position. Those who perform well by consistently exceeding their collection goals may be assigned to more challenging collection projects which offer better pay and bonuses or be promoted to various other positions within the company, such as supervisor, quality control agent, skip tracer, trainer, etc.
