"I've worked for Cogent Communications since 2017 as a NAM (National Account Manager). Cogent's service offering is in the bullseye of the commodity play so it's always about price, price, price. Per the three sales segments, the RAM segment (Regional Account Manager) is a good opportunity for a person with little or no sales / technical experience to get their feet wet with a lower level of tech sales. In all three sales segments, you do get a long ramp but I wouldn't recommend the other two segments - NAM and GAM (National Account Manager Global Account Manager). These two positions are dying on the vine due to what is a very heavy market saturation within the most commoditized part of the tech sector with the net effect being that 98% of the prospects you try to work are already being worked by another Cogent rep."

It is very hard to be successful here based on several factors... no advertising or marketing of our company, we sell a very basic product that companies can get at a better price point than we offer, and sales only work when the company has a "need" versus a "want". Long sales cycles, and management needs to be more helpful in being successful."

Management is not interested in helping you succeed. Even if you do succeed, there is no room to advance. Rules keep changing...changing on more than a day to day basis. Your manager may tell you something and the same day, the director will tell you something to contradict what was told prior."

"It feels like I've hit a brick wall and am not given anymore responsibility. I was on every specialty team but now I don't even get considered for promotions"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"See which employee's actually resolve issues so they don't have to go to our system admins. Give advanced technitians more access or a promotion so we can handle more difficult cases that don't require sys admins or development"

"I would like to have the support and trust of senior management. Use my knowledge and allowed to make the decision based on my knowledge and experience."

"Be honest and truthful about what you can and cannot do."

"Micro management and criticism for the sake of criticism. Lack of confidence in my capabilities."

"Be open and professionally honest. Punish the behavior not the person. Establish and follow the SDLC processes and continuously refine and enhance those processes."
