The city of Houston was founded in 1836 by brothers John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen. The brothers founded Houston shortly after the end of the Texas War for Independence. The city carries the name of General Sam Houston, a hero of the Texas War for Independence. Houston is now the largest city in Texas, and the fourth-largest city in the United States.

The city of Houston has one of the most diverse populations in the south, with an estimated population of 2.1 million people during the 2010 U.S. Census. More than 80 languages are spoken in the Houston area. And as of 2012, 92 countries have consular offices in the city. Houston also has 90 cultural, performing arts and visual organizations dedicated to minority and multicultural arts.
