4.1I worked at Charming Charlie as an ASM for about 3 years. I loved my experience there and had the best, most loyal customers. I helped manage a team of sales associates and members of the corporate management team were accessible to ALL of us for feedback, innovative ideas/programs, and supervisory support. We had a great dynamic in the store and everyone always showed up with positive attitudes ready to reach our daily goals. Every aspect of the job was a valuable teaching and/or learning moment. Although my responsibilities changed when I was internally promoted to the ASM role, I was able to stay humble and maintain humility by being able to continue the responsibilities I had as a sales associate (cashier, fitting rooms, working with customers on the floor, etc.). Also, corporate management always had opportunities for fun/exciting competitions between the stores and regions with great incentives and reward bonuses. Corporate management and my management team were able to provide me with the flexibility I needed to work around my class schedule as a college student AND commit to the required hours for payroll as an ASM. A drawback of this job was that I didn't feel that I had creative autonomy when it came to floor sets, and corporate management would make sure you were strictly following their visuals even if you didn't have the necessary products. Another drawback was the lack of financial benefits for parking, specifically for our store -- employees in the street mall I worked at did not receive parking benefits, and it cost about $9 per day for a full shift as an ASM and I worked 5 (sometimes 6) days per week. This was a hefty amount coming out of pocket, and the parking benefit they later introduced reduced this amount but it was still out of our paychecks.
2.5Pros:
Most coworkers very friendly and positive.
Get paid time and a half for Sunday shifts.
When you are in the back unwrapping products you can listen to your own music.
Customers aren’t as difficult as expected.
One of the cheaper stores in the mall.
Employee discount is 20% which I think is more than a lot of similar stores.
Sometimes there are free snacks in the break room.
Employee bathroom is ridiculously well stocked with toilet paper.
Despite living in Natick somehow not a single person who I know came in when I was on shift.
Cons:
Most shifts are on call and when I was hired I was not told that on call shifts were even a thing.
They don’t let you sit while on the sales floor even if you have a legitimate medical reason.
Convincing customers to sign up for the email list is the only measure of employee productivity, regardless of how well you do other aspects of your job or even if you aren’t assigned to be on cash register that much.
Employee discount does not apply to sale items and I was not told about this until I was already most of the way through buying a sale item.
Employee discount also does not apply to online items.
Often scheduled me for 4 hour shifts so they didn’t legally have to give me a break. (Shifts that are 4.5 hours or longer must have a 15 minute break.)
One really mean manager.
All managers abused wireless walkie-talkie system to trash-talk customers. I often had to rip the headset out of my ear so I could hear myself talk when answering customer’s questions.
Inadequate training, especially on how to operate the cash register.
We throw out rather than recycling the plastic packaging the jewelry comes in.
The purses and handbags smell toxic.
Jewelry is really cheaply made and often broken right out of the box.
An alarming number of products have slogans encouraging casual alcoholism.
Once a manager got mad at me for showing up 8 minutes early because it meant they had to pay me more.
Loud, repetitive, trashy music.
2.7My supervisor is quite friendly but is not understanding. In times of need by supervisor ignores your need. The Compensation for the job is extremely poor for the amount of work Charmers have to do. The relationship between Charmers are little to none. The ability to move up is almost impossible.
