With its 70,000 students, it is the largest community college within the North Carolina Community College System. The institution opened its doors in 1963, after a merger of the Central Industrial Education Center and Mecklenburg College. While based in Charlotte, Central Piedmont has 6 other campuses and a distance learning option.
