What do you like about working at Burns and Roe?

"Many co-workers were friendly. They looked out for you financially when working in the field away from home. Field people and all interface was very good! The level of engineering was high. Cubicles (work stations) had enough room, workspace and drawers. Good parking. Good company extra activities outside of work. Top flight company with good reputation, with a few exceptions."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Take the offer for what it is, be prepared for layoffs. Keep a running diary of your experience at this company. Make sure you find out in detail the project schedules and due dates (because they won't tell you up front). Be mindful at all times that you are under severe scrutiny and subject to criticism if you are even perceived in a negative light!"

What don't you like about working at Burns and Roe?

"Senior Designers were handicapped by being left out of meetings with clients, they are more intimately knowledgeable about the project! If there were any problems or complaints about a person's work sometimes they were not told immediately, if ever about it. Instead they were transferred to another project. (back talking on the part of some supervisors) The problem could have easily been corrected, or the supervisor would have been made aware of things they didn't know about if they had been more upfront. After doing a good job in the field upon return there was not meeting with Chief Engineer or congratulation's on your performance. No immediate personal review of your performance or conduct! Its as though you hadn't been anywhere or done anything. Company has a reputation throughout the industry of laying good people off as soon as they aren't billable! Favoritism abounds without any attempt to hide it! Performance appraisals do not allow for discussion-its just take it, and that's that! No meeting with the supervisor, erroneous statements are put in without any opportunity for feedback from the person being appraised! No constant standard by sup. on telling you of your raise, I had to go to personnel to find out what my raise would be! Slip-shod manner of my yearly appraisal by my supervisor! As witnessed and commented on by accounting! Contractors were treated better than I was by my supervisor! Mind changes on my going to the field by sup.on a project hurt us. He didn't like disagreements in discussion of project work! (Autocratic rule!) He didn't acknowledge extra effort made by me on projects, even after hearing compliments on my performance by lead engineers in my very presence! No mention or praise of the job I did in the field, although my field supervisors extolled my work and begged for me on another project in Kentucky! Basically no fair consistent supervisory treatment given in the design group! Promises of training on PDS at time of hiring were not kept! And ignored after being asked about it!"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Br fair, keep promises made at interviews! Give Sr. Designers more respect and involve them in client meetings. Have reviews of performance upon the immediate return of a employee from the field. Act upon all mu criticisms!"
