Brookdale Senior Living is a facility specializing in the residential, therapeutic, rehabilitation, and independent living needs of seniors living in the United States. Currently, the corporation has over 550 senior living communities in 35 states. Brookdale has several types of facilities, including independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer’s and dementia care, continuing care retirement communities, skilled nursing centers, and personal care centers.

Brookdale was founded in 1978 and focused on upscale retirement communities in large cities such as Chicago and New York. Through mergers with Fortress and the American Retirement Corporation, and acquisition of the properties owned by the Alterra Corporation and several small companies, Brookdale owned over 500 properties by 2006. In 2009, Brookdale entered into a merger with Sunrise Senior Living Services and acquired 21 additional properties. Today, Brookdale is the largest operator of senior living communities in the United States, currently serving over 55,000 residents. The corporation employs over 35,000 staff.
