What do you like about working at Boehringer Ingelheim?

"There are good things about working for a small pharma company that is conservative. This company at one time had VERY low turnover and was genuinely committed to taking care of it's people. The company was conservative in its practices long before the pharma guidelines forced itself on all pharma. BI has an excellent pipeline of products and a bright future."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Depending on where you live you have to be willing to relocate to move up in the ranks. Otherwise be happy as a rep. Show a passion for the medical science and being of value to physicians. Don't ask stupid stuff like what car will you drive. Focus on being an expert of your product and the disease state and a firm grasp of the 80/20 rule."

What don't you like about working at Boehringer Ingelheim?

"The culture is really changing. It's not just about sales anymore. You have to think in the box of compliance. You have metrics about reach, frequency, and calls per day regardless of access, regardless of distance.... Your relationship with your DM will make or break you so make sure you're on the same page or get out quick. They're a privately held company so layoffs aren't always public news the way most pharma companies are open with shareholders. They just laid off an entire sales division and they're still bragging about their pipeline. what! It's the same with all pharma though. Have a plan B."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Stop trying to keep up with big pharmaceutical companies. Stop bringing in upper management from big pharma companies to bring their ways in and dilute the culture. When you have new products stop hiring outside. Value and reward the people who have showed commitment to you and give them experience in new therapeutic areas (i.e. oncology). Stop pretending to listen and care about the lowest guy on the totem pole. We all know it's about trying to get business done and make a buck so stop passing out surveys and move on."
