With more than 1,700 stores, Lowe’s is No. 2 in the hardware game, coming in behind Home Depot. The chain traces its roots to a small-town hardware store in North Carolina. By 1962, Lowe’s had 21 stores. For most of its history, Lowe’s operated smaller stores. But that changed in the 1980′s when it adopted the big-box format to compete with newcomer Home Depot. Lowe’s, which employs some 234,000 people, has stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
