"I love where I work and the people I work with. Big Lots is an excellent company that puts the focus on their customers as well as their store employees, not those at the corporate level."

What do you like about working at Big Lots?

"I enjoyed helping customers and creating great floor displays."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Share with the company what you're able to do, and back it up with powerful evidence that will show your success. Share what you learned, what you want to accomplish. What strategic goal do you want to set, be it corporate or personal, and share the skills you acquired and why those skills will make you stand out above all the rest. Never be afraid to share, if you've done well, be proud but humble, and be willing to give credit to those who helped you achieve that success. I have always done that and along the way there may be companies that exploit your skills and use you. That's retail, but all of us can overcome and press on, not looking back, but moving forward to our goal. And that will make you the best."

What don't you like about working at Big Lots?

"I actually like everything at Big Lots but was disappointed to step down because the company messed up by sending an extra assistant manager to my store who was senior. Because of that, I was forced to choose: either step down as regular employee or quit. I chose to quit. My work was good there and I was a great assistant manager."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I believe the key to successful management is organization, strategic planning, and knowing how to manage time and money effectively. But the greatest key to success is the people who work for you. As a manager you need to know your people, you need to let them know that you want them to succeed and that you respect and encourage suggestions for doing things better. I never go one day without telling my people thank you for their hard work. I do care and because of that, all of my successes in retail have been because my employees went out of their way to be the best. Team work, dynamic customer service that makes customers say, Why did I not come here long ago? Do what it takes to make the customer happy is the Top #1 Goal because they are the ones who keep the business running, and then employees, but smart organization and the know-how in reducing overhead cost while driving sales, and never once cutting on the best customer service. Admirals and captains both have commented that when I ran an operation I ran it like it was my own. I take pride in each and every task, and NO TASK is unimportant. My employees understood this. Training is another key to success and the better trained staff you have, the better the service they will be able to provide. Sorry for writing so much, but all of these points I taught in the Navy and to all my employees outside the Navy, and I have sheets and documents to show that whenever I took over as a manager, within the first year every time, I WAS #ONE. My employees got me there and I never forget this."
