Beazer Homes launched eSMART in response to initiatives aimed at increasing energy and water efficiency. The program also attempted to improve indoor air quality in all new houses. Beazer Homes USA worked in conjunction with General Electric, Moen and Honeywell to meet industry standards for green practices within the home. Beazer Homes strives to remain up to date with the new environmental standards to help consumers keep their expenses low and to reduce negative environmental effects.

Beazer Homes partners with environmentally conscious home construction builders that certify their homes under The U.S. Department of Energy’s EPA Energy Star-qualified Home program and Build San Antonio Green program. Imagine Homes is the primary partner that builds 90 percent of the green-certified homes in the San Antonio area. Beazer Homes ensures that all of their homes meet Energy Star requirements.

Beazer Homes is committed to higher education and design. The company sponsored Georgia Institute of Technology’s entry in the 2007 Solar Decathlon. This international competition was between 20 universities that were challenged to design, build and transport an 800 square foot solar powered house.

Beazer did not escape the housing crisis unscathed. In 2007, they received a grand jury subpoena and were under investigation for mortgage fraud. Beazer was also a defendant in a class action lawsuit that claimed violations and breaches of fiduciary duty were made. By 2009, Beazer Homes reached a $50 million settlement for Mortgage and Accounting Fraud with the United States. The company had to pay $10 million to victimized home buyers.
