Automotive technicians are people who either maintain or repair cars, truck, vans and SUVs. This job requires working on a number of vehicles from day to day, doing everything from replacing engines to simply changing a vehicle's oil. Automotive technicians are also assigned many jobs throughout the day as cars are dropped off at a repair facility.
Skillset: Automotive mechanics are required to have extensive knowledge about the way that a number of automobiles work and how to troubleshoot and repair them. Since the way that cars and trucks from different manufacturers may vary widely, many technicians specialize in working on domestic or import vehicles.
Education: Many automotive mechanics will attend trade schools that teach them how automobiles are constructed and how to work on them. There are also a number of supplemental training courses that mechanics can take that will give them certifications.
Career Path: Automotive mechanics are usually able to find work right out of school, but it is common for them to require ongoing training to keep up with changes and advancements in the automotive industry.
