Atlanta Public Schools was established in 1872 in Atlanta, Georgia by an ordinance passed by the Atlanta City Council. Today, the school system has more than 50,000 students enrolled in 103 public and charter schools around the district. Atlanta Public Schools has implemented the Effective Teacher in Every Classroom (ETEC) Initiative in its schools with the help of a $10 million investment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of the initiative is to recruit, prepare, and place effective teachers in all of the teaching positions in all of the schools throughout the district.
Atlanta Public Schools employs 3,860 faculty and staff members across the district. All of the district’s full time employees in positions that are eligible for benefits and are working at least 20 hours per week can enroll in any of the benefit plans offered by the district and will have at least 11 paid holidays off each year.
