Assistant Technology Manager at US Census Bureau
in Concord, NH

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Working as technical manager for the Census was an odd mix of high-tech know-how battling deeply entrenched bureaucracy"

What do you like about working at US Census Bureau?

"There was an energy and drive to the Census, due in part to the unmovable deadlines and tremendous importance of the work."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The Decennial Census can be a rewarding place to work, but it is very different from 'the real world.' Do not expect skills and mindsets that thrive in commercial IT to serve you as well in the Census- if you have experience in very large organizations or government jobs you may find the transition to this job simple."

What don't you like about working at US Census Bureau?

"The bureaucratic inertia was incredible. When the technical managers pointed out gaping security holes in the system, we were told to ignore them. When we pointed out tools that could have made our systems more efficient, we were told to stop making such suggestions. Frustrating."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The Census is too massive to reach meaningfully to rapid technological changes. The Census should get their technology worked out and tested at least 12 months before attempting to deploy it."
