"Ashley Furniture: Hell hole I would never recommend."
What do you like about working at Ashley Furniture?
"It was close to where I lived at the time. They gave me experience in learning .net technologies and advanced programming techniques."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Look somewhere else. Seriously, if you can move, do it. If you're looking to be a computer programmer, there is nothing in west-central Wisconsin for you besides Ashley. I had to move, and I recommend you stay away from this area if you want to advance your career."
What don't you like about working at Ashley Furniture?
"Pay extremely low and inflexible. Mandatory overtime. Mandatory on call is a major interruption to personal life. Not willing to compensate for extraordinary effort. Not willing to take recommendations to keep up with emerging technologies. Serious office politics. Takes advantage of the fact that it is the only large programming shop in at least 75 miles. Mostly maintenance work, little new development."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Pay your programmers 30-50% more.Give them 4 weeks of vacation, instead of 2.Make sure new hires understand the mandatory overtime and on-call procedures during the interview."
