Overview Appalachian State University is a public institution offering more than 150 degree programs. It was founded in 1899 by brothers Blanford and Dauphin Dougherty. Known as the Watauga Academy, 53 students enrolled the first year. Today, the university boasts a student enrollment of over 17,000.

Appalachian State University is in Boone, North Carolina. Occupying 1,300 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is one of 17 schools in the University of North Carolina system. Appalachian State University is a leader in using renewable energy. Students helped fund construction of a 100 kilowatt wind turbine on campus. This turbine can produce up to 145,000 kilowatt-hours per year of electricity. Several more renewable energy projects received funding from the students. A solar thermal system provides the student union with hot water. Photovoltaic systems installed throughout the campus turn sunlight into electricity.
