Overview The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the largest scientific society in the world. Established more than 150 years ago in New York City, its original mission was the theory and application of chemical research. Over time, ACS became active in teacher training, certification of undergraduate chemistry programs and standardized testing for all aspects of chemistry studies.

ACS maintains its headquarters in Washington D.C. The society is currently comprised of 187 chapters spread across all 50 states. In addition to its national and section meetings, ACS publishes 38 peer-reviewed journals. It also operates numerous educational outreach events, including National Chemistry Week and Project SEED. ACS more than 160,000 dues-paying members. Its 2011 net assets totaled more than $139 million.
