Acclaim Entertainment was founded in 1987 in the state of Delaware. Its headquarters was once located in Oyster Bay, New York. Later, it was moved to One Acclaim Plaza in Glen Cove, New York. Its main business was producing and releasing videogames. Throughout its history, it released games in arcades and on many different platforms, including the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Sega Master System, Super NES, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, Playstation, and Nintendo 64.

Acclaim Entertainment gained success by purchasing the licenses to several popular pop culture franchises. In the 1990's, Acclaim became well known after releasing home versions of the first two installments of the phenomenally popular and controversial "Mortal Kombat" series. Both games were bestsellers. This era also saw Acclaim release games featuring Batman, the Simpsons, and WWF wrestling.
