Account Manager

"Good to get brand name on your resume at Career Start. Your experience there depends upon your Group."

What do you like about working at 3M?

"Most of my co-workers were good at what they did. In the beginning I could work independently. Liked pension, profit sharing, 401 k. Not sure how much it amounted to."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"You will never know who the good groups are because people are generally afraid to say something, so roll the dice and see how it goes."

What don't you like about working at 3M?

"The Managers all knew each other and watched each other's backs to the detriment of the employees. Their bonuses were improved by keeping expenses low for the salespeople. In particular, there were definitely favorites and that was determined by who went along with Management. They enlisted consultants and asked that people give honest opinions about the Group then they slammed people for giving those opinions. New ideas were only accepted from the Favorites. Although it seems like you could join a company like 3M and have opportunities to move in the company, no one in my group who wanted another job was able to get one. The HR people did not really understand the sales process and compensation. The Management had limited experience in the real world and outside 3M yet told employees with real world work experience what to do... even if they themselves were just learning on the fly."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Do not put people together who worked together in previous divisions. When people have great reviews working for other Divisions and then suddenly get bad reviews... just move them to another Division... it's probably politics... not performance. Be less cheap with expenses. At least allow employees to spend per day what government employees do. Have hiring process be more transparent to internal candidates. They lie about what you have to do to get promoted and also lie about why you are not a candidate for a new position. In fact, don't even get back to you. Age is also an issue for trying to find a new position. Don't allow Managers to hire back their cronies who previously worked at the company and maintained friendships with them. It's a form of nepotism that is bad for other employees' morale."
