What do you like about working at United States Army?

"I love working with Soldiers and other Officers, you will not find a more diverse group of people anywhere else in America. The esprit de corps is something you won't find many other places, Soldiers really do look out for each other. The opportunities for travel and activities (I shoot tons of weapons, jump out of airplanes for extra pay!, traveled to three continents) is endless. Medical, dental, and other benefits from living on an installation are generally a lot better than the private sector. Hell, my doctor works in the basement and I can see him any time!"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The Army has a lot of special programs and jobs you can go for, but all of it requires some sort of risk/hard work. DO NOT pass up these opportunities. Even if you fail, you will regret not having given it a shot in the first place and won't learn anything from the experience. I just got into a job in Civil Affairs that fits my degree, offers opportunities for travel that I want, and training that is hard to get in the civilian world. It wasn't easy getting to that point (and I still have a lot left to go) but it's totally worth it. Who knows, you might actually make it!"

What don't you like about working at United States Army?

"Micromanagement is far too common. You will hear many preach push power to the lowest level but I have not seen enough of that anywhere. Expect to be told several times in your career to do something you really don't want to do. Hours can be very, very long and the deployments/field time doesn't make it any easier."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Let leaders be leaders! Stop asking for updates every second of every day and give lower level leadership some latitude or, better yet, support them. Take the hit for your guys once in a while, they will take the hit for you. Finally, enough with damn powerpoint!"
